Des Moines, Iowa-June 19, 2015-The Iowa Supreme Court did side with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland today, ruling against the Iowa Board of Medicine’s 2013 decision to end webcam abortion.  Dangerous webcam abortions will continue unchecked in Iowa.

The Iowa Board of Medicine’s 2013 statement on why they voted to “establish standards of practice for physicians who prescribe or administer abortion-inducing drugs to terminate a pregnancy – medical abortion,” is a must-read.  Their release refutes all of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland’s (PPH) myths about the safety of webcam abortions.  The Iowa Board of Medicine made it about the health and safety of women, regardless of where they live.  You can read their powerful statement here.

There is ample medical evidence that these abortions are unsafe. The FDA has documented 2,207 adverse events in the U.S. of women who have had medical abortions, including 14 deaths, 612 hospitalizations, 339 cases where blood loss was so great the woman needed a transfusion, 256 infections and 58 ectopic pregnancies.  Women who died from medical abortions died from a bacterial infection like toxic shock, hemorrhaging to death, ruptured ectopic pregnancy and massive heart attack.

For these reasons, as we’ve previously reported, Iowans do not want webcam abortions.  In recent years, polling done by both the Des Moines Register and the University of Iowa showed more than 66% of Iowans are against webcam abortions.

“We are certainly devastated by the decision by the Iowa Supreme Court, but absolutely will not relent in our pursuit of seeing all lives, born and unborn protected to the fullest extent,” stated Jenifer Bowen, Executive Director of Iowa Right to Life.

“Obviously, as the largest Pro-Life organization in Iowa, it would be correct to say that we believe in the sanctity of life of the unborn, but we are equally concerned for the safety of born women.

Tragically, for Iowa women and unborn babies, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled against both today”, Bowen concluded.

Since 2008, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland has used women in Iowa as guinea pigs for a program they plan to roll out nationwide, where women are having RU-486 abortions after seeing a doctor ONLY by webcam. This perversion of telemedicine technology is putting women in danger. This must STOP! RU-486 (Medication Abortions) take longer and are bloodier than a surgical abortion. The women take the first drug at the Planned Parenthood office, then take additional drugs that will abort her baby at home. These abortions are more profitable for Planned Parenthood, but traumatic for women who will have to deal with the body of the dead baby at home.
