Planned Parenthood has a history of hurting women.
From botched abortions that have cost women their lives to their cover-up of statutory rapists, Planned Parenthood leaves a path of destruction in every community they touch.
“We provide health care services to women and give them the respect they deserve.”

“The woman was well aware of the risks associated with the procedure before it was performed on her at the Lincoln clinic this summer.”

Planned Parenthood’s Unregulated Clinics are Dangerous for Women
On August 17, 2007, a 40 year-old woman almost died from a botched abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Lincoln, Nebraska, in which Dr. Meryl Severson punctured her uterus, causing her to lose 80 percent of the blood in her body. Severson, who also performs abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics in Council Bluffs and Sioux City, had to resign from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2001, for performing an elective abortion there, against the rules.
Is Severson just any abortion butcher? No. He was Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs at the time. He was one of Planned Parenthood’s experts.
Why was he allowed to still practice? Because Planned Parenthood clinics are not regulated. (Severson’s medical license expired in June 2008 and he has not renewed it, according to the Iowa Board of Medicine website.)
Planned Parenthood does not have to meet the same medical, safety or sanitation standards as other outpatient surgical clinics.
Missouri passed a law in 2007 requiring abortion clinics to meet the same medical standards as ambulatory surgery centers, which are clinics that provide same-day, outpatient surgical procedures. Abortion clinics which must meet the standards are those that perform second and third trimester abortions as well as those that perform more than five first trimester abortions per month.
The Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Missouri website opposed the law because it would “impose unnecessary regulation on abortion clinics.” Safety and sanitation – these are unnecessary? The bill also bans Planned Parenthood speakers from the public schools.
Researcher Kevin Sherlock documented over 140 lawsuits against Planned Parenthood in his 1997 book, The Scarlet Survey, for abuses such as unsanitary conditions, health code violations, medical malpractice, equipment deficiency, fraudulent billing, altered lab reports, sex offenses and more.

Planned Parenthood’s clinics are not safe for women.
Planned Parenthood Keeps Women in the Dark
If Planned Parenthood truly respected women, they would not oppose the following legislation:
• Planned Parenthood Opposes Women’s Right to Know legislation offering women seeking an abortion, info on abortion alternatives and fetal development.
Planned Parenthood fights against legislation that offers women information on fetal development, because it would cut into their abortion profits. Post-abortive teenagers on the website www.TeenBreaks.com frequently cite not having enough information on fetal development – information that would have made them choose life:
“Had I been counseled properly concerning the pain I would feel and the facts about the development of my unborn child, I doubt that I would have chosen abortion.” – Brittany
“The family planning clinic I went to for counseling never suggested another alternative. I was given absolutely no information about the development of the baby. In fact, I was told it was a ‘walnut-sized mass of tissue.”– Jenna
“I was never told anything about the risks, not about the pain, and certainly not about the development of the tiny human inside me.” – Sherry
• Planned Parenthood Opposes Ultrasound legislation providing a woman seeking an abortion the option to view ultrasound images of her child.
“The bottom line is no woman is going to want an abortion after she sees a sonogram.” That is how one abortion clinic director put it to The New York Times.
Advances in ultrasound technology frighten all abortion businesses, because it affects their bottom line. These images show the baby in the womb is more than a mass of tissue or clump of cells. That is why Planned Parenthood will battle any attempts to offer ultrasound images for women considering abortion.
• Planned Parenthood Opposes Parental Consent or Parental Notification legislation for underage girls seeking an abortion.
Planned Parenthood wants to circumvent parents wherever they can.
Without a Parental Notification law, Dr. Meryl Severson, Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs, can puncture your daughter’s uterus and you will not know about it until after she has lost 80 percent of her blood. That is, if she survives the abortion.
• Planned Parenthood Opposes Federal Child Custody Protection legislation prohibiting the transportation of minors across state lines for abortions to avoid parental notification laws.
Parental Notification laws are null and void if anyone can transport your minor daughter to another state for an abortion.
• Planned Parenthood Opposes The Unborn Victims of Violence Act (Laci’s Law) treating a woman and her unborn child who are victims of violence as two victims instead of one.
Planned Parenthood wants to downplay the humanity of the child in the womb at all costs. So desperate is Planned Parenthood, they even tried to block Laci’s Law (The Unborn Victims of Violence Act), passed in 2004, which treated the murder of a pregnant woman and her unborn child as two murder victims, instead of one. Without the law, a person who attacked a pregnant woman and killed her unborn baby could only be charged with assault – not murder.
How could any organization that claims to champion women object to this? Planned Parenthood’s then president Gloria Feldt did, because she said, it was “creating legal personhood for the fetus.”
Planned Parenthood Denies Emotional Cost of Abortion
Planned Parenthood says “Post Abortion Syndrome” does not exist.
There are enough studies, polls and health professionals to verify that post-abortion syndrome does exist and sometimes leads women to self-destructive behavior, including suicide.
For Planned Parenthood to ignore the emotional pain of these women could be the same as a death sentence. Pro-Life groups such as Silent No More, Project Rachel, Rachel’s Vineyard, The Sisters of Life and American Victims of Abortion are picking up the emotional pieces Planned Parenthood left behind.

Planned Parenthood Caters to Statutory Rapists Here in Iowa
Life Dynamics did a study in 2002, calling 800 abortion clinics across the country, including all Planned Parenthood clinics, posing as a 13 year-old pregnant by her 22 year-old boyfriend – clearly, a case of statutory rape. Out of 800 cases – 90 percent of the time – the abortion clinics acknowledged the illegality of the caller’s sexual relationship then agreed to conceal it. Life Dynamics has them all on tape.
The Planned Parenthood clinic in Iowa City went one step further, by telling the 13-year-old, “you will pay cash for this if you have this abortion, and there is no paper trail.”
“Any time an underage girl walks into a contraceptive or abortion clinic, health care workers should be concerned. Almost 70 percent of teen pregnancies are fathered by adult men…That means that a lot of potential cases of statutory rape and child abuse should be reported by Planned Parenthood.” (Source: Angela Franks, www.pphurtsgirls.org)
Morning After Pills to Men
Changing the birth dates of minors is not the only way Planned Parenthood supports statutory rapists. It also makes Free Morning-After Pills (Emergency Contraception) available to them.
One of the biggest fears about the Morning-After Pill is that men would slip the drug to women without their knowledge or consent and statutory rapists would use it to cover their crimes.
Despite this, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa distributed 1,000 free Morning-After Pill doses from 15 locations across Iowa, to both men as well as women on “Free EC Day” December 6, 2006. In her explanation of why they provided these pills to men, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa CEO Jill June told RadioIowa: “Sometimes my husband goes to the drugstore for me to pick up medication or cough syrup over the counter.”
That statement provides little comfort to victims of abuse in the state of Iowa.
Victims of Planned Parenthood:
Here are the stories of few women victimized by Planned Parenthood in recent years:
“Jane Roe,” age 40 – Lincoln, NE
Botched Abortion: August 17, 2007
This woman lost almost 80 percent of her blood and had to have an emergency hysterectomy at a local hospital after Planned Parenthood abortionist Dr. Meryl Severson perforated her uterus during an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Lincoln, Nebraska. During the abortion, the woman sensed something was wrong and started screaming for Severson to stop. Instead, he asked three Planned Parenthood employees to hold her down, while he completed the abortion. In the woman’s lawsuit against Planned Parenthood, Planned Parenthood’s attorneys claimed that she “knew the risks” and the doctor performed the abortion “with great care.” Severson, who lives in Omaha, also performs abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics in Council Bluffs, IA and Sioux City, IA.
Holly Patterson, age 18 – San Francisco, CA
Died: September 17, 2003
Holly Patterson was given RU-486 at Planned Parenthood’s Hayward clinic in San Francisco on September 10, 2003. She later called the Planned Parenthood clinic’s hotline twice after suffering extreme cramping. The first time, she was told to take the prescription pain killer they gave her. The second time, she was instructed to go to an emergency room. She later died in the emergency room of a Clostridium sordellii infection.
Diana Lopez, age 25 – Los Angeles, CA
Died: February 28, 2002
Diana Lopez went to the Los Angeles Planned Parenthood for an abortion when she was 18 weeks into her pregnancy. Planned Parenthood’s abortionist punctured her cervix during the abortion and she later bled to death at a nearby hospital.
The Physicians for Life website cataloged the failures by Planned Parenthood in the Lopez case, as reported by The Sacramento Bee:
• Failure to contact the state within 24 hours after Lopez was taken to a hospital, as required by the state. The state was notified six days after Lopez died.
• Failure to implement a policy that would have advised against an abortion for Lopez because her hemoglobin (a substance in the blood) was too low.
• Inappropriate use of misoprostol, a drug used to promote contractions. Surgical abortion policy dictates that the drug may be given 90 minutes before an abortion. Records show Lopez was given the drug a day earlier.
• Failure by the clinic’s board of directors to “exercise oversight responsibility for ensuring the operation of the clinic.” Minutes from board meetings, for example, did not document “any adverse outcome related to patient care within the facility.”
• Failure to keep a detailed health record on Lopez including her diagnoses, type of anesthesia used during the procedure, surgical findings and the procedure performed.
• According to the newspaper, the state also said the clinic failed to obtain a valid informed consent from the patient prior to surgery. A “reproductive health specialist,” instead of the physician performing the procedure, had obtained the signed consent, which does not meet state requirements.
Linda McCown, 27 – Overland Park, KS
Left in a Coma: November 2, 2000
Linda McCown of Sedalia, Missouri was 27 when she went to Planned Parenthood in Overland Park, KS for tubal ligation surgery. During the surgery, an oxygen tube that was supposed to be placed in her lung, was placed in her stomach instead. Lack of oxygen caused McCown, a mother of four, to go into a coma.

Planned Parenthood Covers Up Rape and Incest
Planned Parenthood also has a history of covering up for statutory rapists and other sexual predators. Lawsuits have been filed against Planned Parenthood in Cincinnati, Ohio for two separate cases where Planned Parenthood ignored Ohio law and did not report crimes against young girls.
Incest Victim, age 16 – Cincinnati, OH
Taken for Abortion by her Father: November 2004
A 16 year-old was forced by her father to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood in Cincinnati. The teen told Planned Parenthood employees she was pregnant with her father’s child and he had been raping her since 2000. In the suit, filed May 9, 2007, the girl said Planned Parenthood did not report the crime to authorities and as a result, she was abused for an additional year and a half.
Statutory Rape Victim, age 13 – Cincinnati, OH
Taken for Abortion by her Statutory Rapist: March 30, 2004
A 21 year-old soccer coach took a 13 year-old girl he impregnated to the same Planned Parenthood clinic in Cincinnati for an abortion on March 30, 2004, without her parents’ knowledge. The girl showed her junior high school ID as her identification. The parents of the girl sued Planned Parenthood for ignoring Ohio’s parental consent law requiring one parent to give permission before performing an abortion on a minor child and also for not reporting the statutory rape to authorities. Thanks to the court case, the 21 year-old went to jail. Planned Parenthood appealed a decision by the judge requiring them produce redacted records of abortions on other minors.
Danielle Cramer, age 15 – West Hartford, CT
Taken for Abortion by her Statutory Rapist: May 1, 2007
Danielle Cramer, a 15 year-old runaway was discovered distraught and crying by police in West Hartford, Connecticut, in a storage space under the stairs, with a door blocked by a dresser in the home of a 41 year-old Adam P. Gault on June 6, 2007. Cramer had been missing from her home in Bloomfield for almost a year. Danielle’s friends told authorities that prior to her disappearance, Danielle told them she and Gault were in a relationship and were having sex. Police detectives on the case said that Cramer had recently had an abortion at Planned Parenthood’s West Hartford location. Planned Parenthood never reported the crime.
