“How did I get into this situation and what is the fastest way I can get out of it?”

Some people will pressure you into making a rushed decision, but too often at Iowa Right to Life, we hear from women who have had abortions who say, “Nobody told me…” or “If I had only known…”

We want to make sure that doesn’t happen to you.

You owe it to yourself to have all the facts and review each one of your options.

If you are pregnant and feel like you are not ready to care for a child, you have a unique opportunity to give the gift of life to a couple not able to have a child on their own.

What is adoption? Adoption is a legal act of permanently placing a child with parents other than the biological or birth parents. The adoptive parents become legally responsible for the child and the child is entitled to all privileges belonging to a natural child of the adoptive parents.

There are many different adoption arrangements – you can choose to have contact with the adoptive parents and your child, or you can choose to have no contact at all. It is up to you. Many adoption agencies allow you to be involved in the process of selecting the parents who will adopt your child.

Adoption is a very selfless act – it’s one both you and your child can live with. More on Adoption.

Drop Off the Child at a Health Care Facility

You have a newborn baby and you just can’t deal with it. You want what’s best for your child, but you know right now, you can’t provide it. The state of Iowa allows you to drop a baby up to 14 days old off at a health care facility under Iowa’s Safe Haven Law — NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

Keep the Child

Being a parent is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have – and the most challenging. When you give birth to that baby everything in your life will change.

Some people only think of the negatives. That baby will be a crying, pooping, spitting up machine, they will tell you. And a money drain – how can you possibly afford all the diapers, clothing, baby food, toys – not to mention a college education?

You may never understand, until you hold that baby in your arms and have that bonding experience between mother and child. Your whole life will be enriched by this child. What a joy to see the first smile, feel the first grasp of a tiny hand around your finger, hear the first words, help the child with his or her first steps.

Children are not a burden, they are a gift. Some women long for a child with every fiber of their being and here you are with an opportunity to have one of your own.

You may feel like you are all alone, but you’re not. If you are a teenager, there have been teen mothers before you. If you are a college student, you won’t be the first college student to juggle research papers and a child. If you are married with children, there are enough mothers before you who are expecting with at least one or more child they didn’t expect.

You will need help – because even the most experienced “Super Mom” needs help. Will it be easy? No. But what in life is easy? There are many resources and people to help you along the way. A good place to start is with a list of Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers in Iowa.

“My boyfriend said he would dump me if I did not have an abortion.”

“My boyfriend’s parents offered to take me for the abortion – and pay for it.”

“My parents said they would kick me out of the house if I have this child.”

“My parents said to have an abortion, because their reputations are at stake.”

“My friends said to have an abortion so I don’t miss the prom.”

“My friends said to have an abortion, because pregnancy will ruin my body.”

“My guidance counselor said it would be difficult to attend college with a child.”

“The woman at the clinic said to have an abortion, because I couldn’t afford a child.”

Women are often pressured into having abortions – because they don’t have the financial resources; because an abusive person in their life said so; because they struggle with health problems or addictions; because they don’t have any place or anyone to turn to.

Abortion is always offered to pregnant women as a “quick solution” to make the “problem pregnancy” go away. It isn’t.

Women are hurt by abortion. Many women are denied medically accurate information, when they are seeking an abortion from an abortion clinic. Why? It’s bad for business.

Women have a right to the truth. Iowa Right to Life has compiled resources on Methods of Abortion and Risks, Post Abortion Syndrome, Planned Parenthood, Fetal Development and Ultrasounds and more. You owe it to yourself to get all the information you can before having an abortion. More on Abortion here.
